I have suffered from depression and anxiety on and off since I was around 11 years old. I’m now in my mid thirties and have held down a range of professional jobs in PR, marketing and politics all while masking my illness (sometimes successfully!). I have reached crisis points and become suicidal. It sounds shocking to say that but there are thousands if not millions of people in the same situation. Mental Health Mates is a nice way to meet up with people who’ve experienced some similar situations. It was – and is – a huge support during a difficult time in my life. It’s judgment-free and friendly and can be an add on to other help you may be getting through the NHS (please do get help through your GP / A&E if you need it). If you don’t want to share your story you don’t have to, you can just chat about what’s on Netflix, what you’re having for dinner etc. Like any new thing it can be daunting to go along but it’s worth it. Blokes can be terrible at expressing their feelings and I would include myself in that category but it feels great when you do. Hey what’s the worst that could happen…ok that’s prob not the thing to say to people with mental health issues…we can imagine a lot. Anyway, come along!
